Coker University Celebrates Academic Excellence at 2026 Honors Convocation

Hartsville, SC (04/24/2026) — Coker University recognized the achievements, leadership, and academic excellence of its students during the 2026 Honors Convocation, held Thursday, April 16, in Watson Theatre.

The annual event celebrated students whose work represents the highest standards of scholarship, research, leadership, and service. Faculty, staff, trustees, families, and supporters gathered to honor a year defined by intellectual curiosity, persistence, and meaningful accomplishment.

"Honors Convocation gives us a powerful moment to reflect on what is possible when students are supported, challenged, and inspired," said Provost Dr. Susan Henderson. "Today's honorees represent the very best of Coker: students who have invested in their education and are already shaping the future."

The program recognized a wide range of academic achievements, including President's List and Dean's List students, national honor society inductees, study abroad scholars, and student-athletes earning conference and national academic honors.

Recognizing Excellence Across Academic Schools

A highlight of the ceremony was the presentation of Outstanding Senior Awards, honoring students who exemplify academic achievement, leadership, and impact within their respective disciplines.

Among those recognized were:

Haley McCoy, Outstanding Senior in the College of Health Professions, noted for her clinical excellence, compassionate patient care, and leadership in healthcare settings.

Rachel Grove, Outstanding Senior in the College of Humanities and Sciences, whose undergraduate research, academic performance, and leadership position her for continued study in genetics.

George Cobb, Outstanding Senior in the College of Humanities and Sciences, recognized for his academic excellence, leadership, and commitment to advancing mental health counseling.

Nour Noujaim, Outstanding Senior in the School of Business, whose journey from international student-athlete to academic leader reflects resilience, determination, and global perspective.

Ryan Cox, Outstanding Senior in the McCall School of Visual and Performing Arts, celebrated for excellence in music education and mentorship of young musicians.

Ashton Goodwin, Outstanding Senior in the Wiggins School of Education, honored for her academic achievement and immediate impact as a classroom teacher.

"These students are not only high achievers, but they are contributors," Henderson said. "They elevate their peers, strengthen their communities, and reflect the kind of graduates the world needs."

Honors Program Graduates and Research Impact

The ceremony also recognized graduates of Coker University's Honors Program, which provides enhanced academic opportunities through research, internships, global experiences, and faculty mentorship.

Honors graduates completed capstone research projects addressing real-world challenges - from healthcare accessibility and environmental sustainability to marketing, psychology, and social equity. Their work underscores Coker's commitment to personalized, applied learning that prepares students for meaningful careers and lives of impact.

Additionally, the University honored its S-STEM Scholars, supported by the National Science Foundation, and students receiving South Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities (SCICU) research grants. These students conducted faculty-mentored research spanning topics such as environmental microbiology, cybersecurity, equine science, and molecular biology.

A Community Committed to Student Success

Coker's Honors Convocation reflects a broader institutional commitment to investing in student success through close faculty mentorship, hands-on learning, and opportunities that extend beyond the classroom.

Board of Trustees Chair Justin Towey, a Coker alumnus, commended the honorees and the University community.

"This ceremony represents the shared commitment to scholarship and service that defines Coker University," Towey said. "The achievements we celebrate today are made possible by a community that believes in the power of education to transform lives."

Looking Ahead

As the University prepares for Commencement in May, the Honors Convocation serves as both a celebration and a milestone - recognizing not only what students have accomplished, but what they are prepared to do next.

At Coker, that preparation is intentional: an investment in knowledge, relationships, and experiences that equip graduates to lead, serve, and succeed.
